Juan's Story

Juan Santiago, an Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making major, did his summer internship at CICATA, the Research Center for Applied Science and Advance Technology of the National Polytechnic Institute in Querétaro, where he worked on a project to improve the Instituto Mexicano de Oftalmología's capacity to assess patient eligibility for corneal refractive surgery.

"My main contribution was creating and implementing a web-based technology that automated the refractive surgery candidate evaluation. I was heavily involved in the project's architecture design, software development, and verification that the system satisfies accuracy, scalability, and reliability standards. Additionally, I improved the deployment procedure by utilizing AWS cloud services and thoroughly documented the system to make future maintenance and improvements easier."

"This internship greatly enhanced my academic and professional goals, giving me practical experience with cloud computing and machine learning in a healthcare setting. I studied the theoretical side of these technologies at MIT, but using them in a real-world project with real-world consequences helped me grasp them better and piqued my interest in cloud computing even more."
